Ongoing Preservation + Restoration Efforts

Structural Integrity
Major structural improvements are in the works to more fully secure to the understructure of BIG RED's tower. This structure has not never been assessed since its original build and needs to be professionally  audited to ensure there is no rotting or other structural damage.

Weatherproofing + Materials
Installation of new, weatherproof materials will help BIG RED withstand the elements and Michigan’s harsh winters. This includes marine grade paint and specialized restoration tools designed for long term durability.

Window Replacement Project
A full replacement of all existing windows is currently underway. The current windows open inward, which means that during high winds (sometimes over 50 miles per hour!) they can blow open and allow moisture and sand inside. The new, professionally installed window system will ensure they remain securely closed, strengthening long‑term historic preservation.

The historic windows have not been fully replaced since 1936. The new frames are being crafted from custom‑cut cypress wood—an extremely hard and durable material that will reduce future repairs and maintenance.

Ongoing Care
Painting and sanding are continuous needs due to the severe weather conditions BIG RED endures year round.
